  ·        Host Community Greenway Fund Standing Committee - Projects Funded

  • North Tonawanda — The committee approved funding $248,600 for Gratwick-Riverside Park. The initial funding will cover a portion of the project’s Phase One, which includes renovations to a shelter, the construction of a “natural play area” and a fishing pier. (More information available in pdf. format).

  • Town of Niagara — The committee approved funding for the last phase of construction at the 142-acre Veteran’s Memorial Park.  When complete, the park will include a 22,000- square foot community center, amphitheater and athletic facilities. (More information available in pdf. format).

  • Town of Lewiston — Freedom Crossing Monument
The Freedom Crossing Monument will commemorate Western New York’s role in helping enslaved African Americans from the South escape to Canada in the mid-1850s. Tens of thousands of Western New Yorkers were strict abolitionists, many of whom became active and secret volunteers in the Underground Railroad, putting their families and livelihoods at risk. The monument, anticipated to be unveiled in 2009, will highlight the importance the Niagara River played as a “gateway to freedom” for hundreds escaping the tyranny of slavery and will celebrate the River’s role as a focal point for the triumph of the human spirit over oppression.  The project will receive $180,000 from the Host Community Greenway Fund. (More information available in pdf. format).

  • City of Niagara Falls – Riverview Trail Comfort Station
The City of Niagara Falls proposes to landscape, install lighting and renovate a comfort station located on the upper Niagara River at the terminus of the Niagara Riverview hiking/biking trail. That area is often used by fishermen, boaters, hikers, bicyclists and by residents just wishing to sit and enjoy the view of the River.  The project will receive $76,475 from the Host Community Greenway Fund. (More information available in pdf. format).

  • City of Niagara Falls — LaSalle Blueway Trail
The LaSalle Blueway Conservation Corridor project is a community-based project between the City of Niagara Falls and LaSalle Pride focused on improving the environmental quality and public access to the Niagara River and Little River shorelines from Griffon and Jayne Parks to the former Century Club site at the North Grand Island Bridge.  One objective of the project is to develop a canoe trail in the Little River from a launch site at the historic Century Club park site.  The project also proposes to conduct a tree survey, husbandry and planting to promote healthy green structure within the corridor.  The project will receive $105,500 from the Host Community Greenway Fund.
